TEXT CITATION
Lowry, Lois. The Giver. 1993. Vol. 1, New York,
Houghton Mifflin, 1993, pp. 111–135.
A redesign of two chapters from Lois Lowry’s The Giver (one of my favorite pieces of required reading from grade school), this project incorporates skills of publication layout, photography and bookbinding. I first read the best-selling novel in my 7th grade English class, and it has since stuck out to me as one of my favorite required readings from school. In designing this structural book, I wanted the copy to be centered and have a rigid structure to represent our protagonist’s society. The photography follows his journey as he learns and sees color for the first time, transitioning from pure black and white, to spots of red, and eventually to full color. These photos, along with the pull quotes and annotations, break up the structure of the text. As told in the story, the color red is used as a recurring motif in this book's design.
The assignment also called for the physical production of the publication as a printed, hardcover book using the case binding method. I acquired red endpapers with pressed leaves to follow the text’s motifs of color and nature.
