Designed during her semester abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, The Transit Deck is an original set of 52 playing cards incorporating the theme of sustainable energy. Known as a “City of Cyclists,” Copenhagen is renowned for its commitments to sustainability through its well-developed transportation system and infrastructure. In taking inspiration from her first month abroad, Kayla wanted to highlight the city’s distinct modes of transport—walking, cycling, public transportation, and cars—and spread awareness of the carbon impacts transportation has on the planet.
The typeface selected for the deck was KBH Sans, which she learned was commissioned specifically for the city of Copenhagen. Tonally, she aimed to lean towards a more abstract, playful, and minimal look, taking influence from Scandivian design styles. The face cards and jokers combine pieces of visual elements used in each suit design, and the card back incorporates the simplified shapes that represent the four suits. Physical mockups of the cards and box were later printed and assembled.
